Overkill:PC is tonight!!! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Rahul Agarwal
Friday, 19 March 2010
Just a quick reminder that our LAN Party is tonight at 6:00pm. (Doors open for the those with a PC RSVP at 5:30 to setup). If you haven't registered yet, we have a waiting list. Many people register but don't show up so come ready to play even if you are on the waiting list. We will allow open seating at 7pm. Please remember to bring a College ID.

A few reminders...
  1. Read the rules page
  2. Backup your critical files, and what you're working on like your final paper, thesis etc to an external hard drive, dvd, 5 1/4 diskette, thumb drive etc.  The last thing you want is drop your computer leaving the lan and loose something important.
  3. Update your computer over at Windows Update to get the latest patches.
  4. Update your graphics driver. There are separate sites for Desktop users and laptop users.
  5. Check out these links to see if you qualify for some free games like Half-life 2 Deathmatch on steam.
  6. If you don't own L4D1 and/or 2, TF2, Counter Strike Source or Half-life 2 Deathmatch and want to play them at the LAN, Now! is the time to buy and install them before hand. Do the right thing and buy the games you want to play.
  7. Set Steam to Offline Mode. This will prevent a Friday Steam update from crashing the LAN

***FYI for those using the beta steam client UI I had trouble switching to offline mode by going to "Steam>Go Offline" this simply DID NOT do anything. Instead do this: (from steam forum) QUOTE: 1. Log in normally to your Steam account. 2. After you've gotten everything updated, exit Steam. Exit it COMPLETELY. You don't want Steam.exe running at all. 3. Go into your network settings and disable your network. 4. Start up Steam. Now, it'll prompt you to start in offline mode. You can choose that option, and Steam will start up in offline mode without any errors. 5. Go back into your network settings and enable your network. You are now set for some serious LAN party. (Thanks aea414)
  8. Plan ahead how to get to the lan and how you are going to fit your computer safely in your car.
  9. Double check that you have everything you need to have a great night: We're not kidding that you need to bring a mouse pad.
  10. Read the rules page
  11. Please before you pack up your computer, Test all of the games you think you might play and make sure they are fully updated and working. Internet at the LAN will be VERY slow.
  12. To prevent power problems at the LAN,  Please attempt to alternate desktop/laptop down the tables. There is a  limit 2 desktops to one of our powerstrips.  We don't want a circuit breaker to trip. We have marked the seats where desktops or laptops are preferred.
  13. If for some reason you or neighbor doesn't have the latest update for your game at the lan, please see the help desk rather than trying to download it. We have local copies of the updates available for the games we are hosting.

Can't to frag with you tonight. Bring a Friend!
